Kline Unhappy With Duncan’s Lack of Details on NCLB Waivers Plan

So, Rep. John Kline, R-Minn., the chairman of the House Education and the Workforce Committee, is less than thrilled with the response from U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan to his request for more information about the department’s plan to give states leeway on parts of the No Child Left Behind Act in exchange for signing onto a package of reforms-to-be-named-later.

Here’s Duncan’s response. To summarize, if you expected the department to provide Kline & Co. with a thorough, detailed explanation of the waiver proposal, you’ll be sorely disappointed.

The letter lays out the rationale for the waiver plan (the law is overdue for reauthorization, states are clamoring for an update, the vast majority of the nation’s schools will be identified as failing).

Golf Tournament Supporting At-Risk Youth Needs Golfers and Sponsors

Every year in Sacramento County, hundreds of students are expelled from school due to involvement in on-campus violence. Many of these instances of violence involve weapons. In order for students to be readmitted to their schools (particularly in cases that reach the court system) they must successfully complete a sanctioned violence prevention program. Project SAVE (Safe Alternatives and Violence Education) is one such program. It is a program that needs the public’s help and support.

The 9th Annual Project SAVE Golf Tournament is scheduled for Monday, October 3, 2011, at the Catta Verdera Country Club in Lincoln. Check-in will begin at 8:00 a.m. and the “shotgun” start will begin at 9:00 a.m. Read full post…

Lewis-Palmer senior focused on helping girl walk

If Collene Larson has to write one of those “How I spent my summer vacation” essays this fall, she will have quite a story to tell.

The 17-year-old Lewis-Palmer High School student is raising money for life-changing surgery for a girl in the Dominican Republic.

Collene has raised $2,700,  but needs another $2,000. To get closer to her goal, she and friends will hold a car wash Saturday in Monument.

Her quest started last Thanksgiving during another school vacation. Collene and her family went to the Dominican Republic with their church, The Gathering, which is partnering with Colorado Springs-based Vision Trust International to help  impoverished children.

Collene said she was dismayed at seeing children living in tin lean-tos with no running water and little food.

She met eight-year-old Esmailyn Ramirez at the unveiling of a playground.

Houghton County healthier for babies

HOUGHTON COUNTY — A new report finds Houghton County has the lowest health risks for infants in the state of Michigan.  The county ranked top 10 in the state for almost all of the indicators in the “Right Start in Michigan” 2011 study.

That means there are fewer premature or low birth weight babies, unmarried mothers, teen births and uneducated mothers in Houghton County than in most of the state.  Health officials say there are possible explanations.

“Houghton has been fairly stable economically in the last few years,” says Western U.P. Medical Director Dr. Terry Frankovich.  ”Our numb

College Tuition: Save or Borrow?

It’s painful receiving the short, simple advice that paints one pristine illustration which you will never ever be able to remove from your mind. The kind of advice you understand you need to know, but that you sorely wished you’d never heard, read, or seen.

Lynn O’Shaughnessy sums up saving for college versus borrowing with this vomit-inducing blow:

Every $1 you stash away for college will save you from borrowing $3.

Stupid logical math.
