Our Children, Our City: The child of children

As Jason Brewster sits next to his mother and father on the couch of their Southside home, it’s almost difficult to distinguish the child from the parents.

At 14, Jason is boyish enough. He’s bright-eyed and soft-spoken, and possesses only the promise of facial hair.

But when you look at Jason’s parents, it’s hard to picture them as parents. At least his parents.

His father, Jason Sr., is 28. His mother, Melissa Vega, is 27.

The reaction is not limited to outsiders. When Jason turned 14 last month, his parents looked at him and tried to imagine themselves at that age, and as new parents. “We were stunned,” Melissa said.

The situation is such that IPS Superintendent Eugene White told The Indianapolis Star he is considering making the two-week courses mandatory for some students next year.

“All of this,” White said, “gives us a rationale for whether or not we want to make it mandatory.”

While no one at IPS is happy with the attendance, Associate Superintendent Li-Yen Johnson said it was to be somewhat expected.
