Albany ISD Superintendent among top five in state
Shane Fields, superintendent of Albany Independent School District, has been named one of five public school administrators from across Texas selected as state finalists for the annual Superintendent of the Year title.
The award, sponsored by the Texas Association of School Boards, recognizes exemplary superintendents for excellence and achievement in educational leadership, according to a news release.
Other finalists are Arturo Almendarez, Calallen ISD; Eddie Coulson, College Station ISD; Greg Wright, Hallsville ISD; and Larry Appel, Dumas ISD. All are members of the Texas Association of School Administrators.
Fields has led Albany ISD for seven years and serves about 500 students. The selection committee noted that he keeps parents highly involved through community meetings, uses all campus and district resources for maximum effect and believes in the educational value of travel for students. He also reaches out to the broader community to foster volunteer programs, according to the news release.
Fields earned his bachelor’s degree in elementary education and masters of education administration at Texas Tech University. He is a member of the Albany Chamber of Commerce, Past President of Albany Kiwanis, and serves on the boards of the West Texas Telecommunications Consortium (Chairman), Albany Little League, and former board member of the Old Jail Art Center.
Fields also is an Albany Lion Booster member, TASA Executive Committee member, Past President of Region 14 Big Country School Administrators and former Region 14 Equity Center director.Superintendents from any of the state’s 1,034 school districts are eligible for nomination by their local boards of trustees. District nominees are submitted to a regional selection committee, which submits one nominee per region to the state selection committee.
The 2010 winner will be announced Sept. 26 at the TASA/TASB Convention in Houston. The winning superintendent will receive an award from Balfour, program underwriter.
