Kids learn life lessons through golf

ELY TOWNSHIP — Kids are teeing off at courses all across Marquette County this summer in the 11th Annual Marquette Junior Golf League.  Monday, they played at the Wawonowin Golf Club in Ely Township.

The members range in age from 8 to 18 with various experience levels.  Prizes and trophies are awarded to the winners, including scholarships for the older members.

“The overall goal of the program is to introduce golfers to the sport.  It teaches them etiquette; it teaches them the rules of the game.  It’s a way for the kids to compete and golf competitively,” said Golf League President, Angela Mason-Epper.

Golf etiquette is a key component in this program as each member had to complete a one-hour etiquette class.

Organizers of the group say the high standards of the six-week long program teaches them patience and good sportsmanship.
