Local elementary school receives new heating system
PELKIE — Cleaner air and consistent temperatures are just two benefits of the new heating system at the Pelkie Elementary School.
Even when the students stay indoors for recess they still breathe some fresh air thanks to new energy recovery units.
The school switched from a nearly 80-year-old coal-fired steam system to a propane-fueled hot water boiler, earlier this year.
An added geothermal pump absorbs heat from water and cuts back on the school’s use of propane.
“We’re finding that when the heat pump is running, it’s able to supply 80 percent of the heat at night and a portion of the heat during the day,” said Interim Superintendent Norman McKindles.
The district was awarded a $382,000 grant last year to pay for the project, which is just the latest in their efforts to go green.
