A reader recently brought an importantstory to our attention.
Its a horrifying account of abuse at the O.D. Heck Developmental Center, a state-run institution for people with autism and other developmental disabilities in New York State. The article, an investigation by reporter Danny Hakim, was published on Sunday in the New York Times. As the article reveals, abuse at the facility culminated in the 2007 death of 13-year-old Jonathan Carey. Carey, who was born with severe autism, died of asphyxiation after a facility employee sat on him to restrain him in the back of a van. Another employee observed what was happening, but didnt intervene. While the boy was suffocating beneath him, the man told him, “I could be a good king or a bad king.” The O.D.
Breckenridge native receives state leadership award
William W. Thompson, vice president of student learning and innovative solutions at Texas State Technical College West Texas, has been awarded the 2011 Ray Williams Outstanding Leadership Award from the Texas Community College Instructional Administrators.
Thompson, a native of Breckenridge, began working for TSTC in 2000 as the coordinator of faculty development. In addition to his current position, he has served as coordinator of curriculum.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – A two-week photo and animation workshop for teens will be offered by the UC Riverside Gluck Fellows Program of the Arts at the UCR ARTSblock in June. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, June 8.
Classes will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. June 21-23 and June 28-30 at the ARTSblock using the Digital Studio at the California Museum of Photography, 3800 Main St., Riverside.
All materials will be provided. The workshop is intended for all levels of ability and is free.
The workshop will delve into the process of animation through photography, said course instructor Nathan Bockelman, a Gluck graduate fellow at the Sweeney Art Gallery, which is one of three venues comprising the ARTSblock in downtown Riverside.
Starting with basic processes of animation used in drawing and film, the workshop will explore the potential of popular GIF animation used and seen on the Web, he said. S Read full post…
